The Project: A display featuring
nearly 1,000 blocks made from patterns from the Kansas City Star newspaper
columns of 1928 through 1961 has been assembled by the Central Oklahoma
Quilters Guild. The complete exhibit
includes 41 quilt-sized panels, each containing about 25 individually quilted
& bound blocks, plus four quilts made from pattern series. In 1985 Betty Jo Haines proposed that the guild
collect original clippings of the 1,068 patterns published by the Star. As word spread about the project, original
pattern clippings arrived by the bundle.
Each pattern was re-drafted and the quilt block sewn, quilted and bound
by a guild member. As the blocks were
completed they were mounted on black felt panels for display.
The Block Collection: The 41 panels
of the Kansas City Star Block Collection are arranged chronologically, with the
blocks displayed in the same order in which they were originally
published. Blocks containing feed and
flour sack fabrics are specially marked, since these materials were widely used
by quilters when the patterns appeared in the Kansas City Star. Every aspect of life was represented over the
fifty years the patterns were printed.
