SUPPLY LIST for QUILTED POSTCARD class

If you have a copy of the book, Positively Postcards, please bring it!  Purchase of book is not required for this class (but will be available for $24.95 if desired).

sewing machine that does a zigzag stitch (satin stitching).  Note: sewing machine should be in good running order...tension balanced, oiled recently if needed, needle changed in the last eight hours of sewing time, etc.   If you are not real familiar with adjusting the zigzag (satin stitch), please bring your machine’s instruction manual.

If you have a free-motion or darning foot, bring that along.

extension cord?

thread – black – at least half a spool – white, one bobbin full plus a back-up spool or second bobbin – a few favorite colors, plus any metallics you might have for embellishing.  Cotton thread works best for the satin stitch on the edge of the postcard – rayon thread is so thin that it takes many layers of stitching to cover the edge.

Sharp Small Scissors for fussy cutting

normal supplies...scissors, a few pins, a needle for handsewing

rotary cutter and small mat, if you have one that is convenient to carry with you

a scrap of fabric for testing machine satin-stitching

bring along at least one spare sewing-machine needle

If you have a teflon pressing sheet for using fusible web, please bring it; but don't go buy one, we can share (I'll bring two).

Fabrics:  you may of course bring your own fabrics and batting and embellishments—it’s always good to use up your stash, and quilted postcards are a great way to use those fun fat quarters you’ve collected.  Quilting is always enhanced when two or three fabrics or trims coordinate, so try to bring along a few things that go together, as well as threads.  22” of ribbon to embellish the edge is nice—the narrower the ribbon, the easier it is to stitch and miter (1/8” is my favorite width).

Or, Bonnie will have kits for sale (all postcard kits are $4 to $8):

Innards kits are $4 per kit (makes one postcard):  includes one 4” x 6” piece of Peltex 72 (stiffner, fusible on both sides), two 4” x 6” pieces of Stitchwitchery (fusible), two layers of Warm & Natural batting, and two pieces of white cotton fabric for the message side (one of which is rubber-stamped “Post Card”).

Bonnie will also bring along some postcard kits from her website—you can see some of them at

www.quilted-postcards.com.  If there is a particular postcard kit at the website that you’d like to make, please email Bonnie ahead of time so she can be sure to bring that kit along (no obligation to purchase it, as you may want a different kit once you see them all).

A checklist for assembling your postcard will be provided during the class.  Bring a carefree spirit – with postcards, it’s all about just having fun.

Questions are welcomed!

Before coming to class:

Practice sewing a  1/8’’ seam allowance on your machine. If you are sewing on a sigzag machine, you will probably find it easier to do with your needle pushed all the way to the right.  Having a perfect 1/8 ‘’ seam allowance is ont imprortant. Having a consistent seam allowance is.

Sept. 24th Workshop:  Marilyn Withrow

Friday Workshop:  Judging and Appraising  9am-4pm

Fee: Regisration fee $10, Class Fee $30

       Nonmembers: Registration fee $20

The morning session will be spent on appraising.  It won’t teach you how to BE an appraiser (that takes a lot longer than two hours!) but it will teach you ABOUT appraising:

**  what goes into appraising

**  what you need to do if you want to become an appraiser

**  the different types of appraisals

** why you should have your quilts appraised

** what to look for to determine a quilt’s value.

** ethics of appraising

We will also study fabric dating, styles of quilting at different times in our history, and other things that must be considered when giving an appraisal (threads, dyes, history of quilt, etc.)  This section of the class will give you insight into what is involved in appraising quilts and determining the value of your own quilts, as well as any you may be considering buying or selling in the future.  I will have quilts with me to illustrate various time periods and values.   Please bring your own quilts to be used as examples.  Two or three oral appraisals will be given during the class (with no extra charge) depending on the time available.  We can discuss care and repair of quilts also, if time allows.

We’ll take a brief lunch break and then the rest of the day will be spent on judging:

**   what judges look for

**   how to make your quilt an award-winner,

**   how to enter a show with a reasonable expectation of winning an award

**   ethics of judging

Then we’ll have hands-on judging.   I will bring quilts – the good, the bad and the ugly – to illustrate judging points.   Please bring any quilts you’d like to have judged – ones you’ve made, ones someone else has made, good, bad or otherwise……… then it’s YOUR turn to judge and see what it feels like.  I’ll also share my judging experiences in county fairs, State fairs, big shows, small shows – and judging in other venues.

NOTE:  Antique and vintage quilts are not judged, so please bring those only for the appraisal portion of the class.

BRING TO CLASS:

Cameras, if you choose, as photographs are allowed.

Notepad, pencils and pencil sharpener (no ballpoint pens allowed near the quilts)

No recording permitted, but you may take notes on anything occurring in class.

Be aware of makeup and jewelry you are wearing – please leave any jewelry at home that might catch on any of the quilts. Obviously, you don’t have to take off your wedding rings – they can be turned around or taped if you are handling the quilts -- but other jewelry should not be worn around the quilts.  Professional judges and appraisers do not wear makeup around quilts, in an abundance of caution to protect the quilts, so you’ll get me in all my “natural beauty” – join me in a makeup-free day!

White gloves or antibacterial hand cleaner.

The most important thing to bring to class?  An open mind, a love of quilts, and a desire to learn everything you can about them.
