Our Mission
The making of quilts historically started out of necessity for warmth and comfort but has turned into a textile art form as well as the original utilitarian purpose. Central Oklahoma Quilters Guild was founded by Betty Jo Haynes in 1980. The purpose of this organization has been to stimulate an interest in quilts; to promote and advance the art of quilt making; to conduct educational programs and services in all aspects of quilt making; and to preserve our quilting heritage and traditions.
This Guild is a non-profit corporation with a 501(c)(3) status due to our activities in what we call “Heart Warmers” and “Heritage.” Membership is open to all who have an interest in quilting. Heart Warmers is comprised of our members who voluntarily create quilts for community organizations who provide aid and comfort to children and adults in need. Since 1994, 11,772 quilts have been donated.
We currently donate our quilts to: Infant Crisis Services OU Children’s Hospital Battered Women’s Shelter Santa Cause CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates)
Each month, our meetings are inspired by outside speakers, both locally and nationally known. Workshops are also available to members and the public monthly to learn basic quilting, new techniques, and advance the art of quilting. We have donated funds to allow children to attend quilt camps and acquire their own sewing machines in hopes of instilling sewing skills and quilt making to a new generation.
Heritage is tasked with presenting programs and demonstrations to other groups in our community.
For example: State Fair of Oklahoma Libraries Churches Schools Living Centers/Nursing Homes
COQG hosts a juried Quilt Show every other year featuring 200 to 400 quilts made by our members. Judges are trained and certified through a national organization and are not from our membership. Our Quilt Show is our way to earn funds to support our Guild for the next two years of service, which includes our supplies, our meeting place, our speakers, the cost of our donations through Heart Warmers, and our educational endeavors. Any funds received from our sponsors would be to enhance our purpose.
Our Story
In 1980, Betty Jo Haines had a dream – to bring together like-minded individuals passionate about quilting. That dream became the Central Oklahoma Quilters Guild (COQG). From our humble beginnings with 30 enthusiastic members at the first meeting in April 1980, we've grown to a vibrant community of over 200 members. We invite you to be a part of our story!
Did you know?
COQG isn't just a guild; we're a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization run by a dedicated volunteer board of directors. This means every meeting, every workshop, and every event we organize is driven by a shared love for quilting and a commitment to giving back to our community.
As a member, your involvement with COQG goes beyond the creative joy of quilting – it contributes to our community through volunteerism and service.
